Betting on Health: Problem Gambling in Illinois & The Physician’s Role in Screening & Early Intervention
Join Timothy Fong, MD, nationally recognized addiction psychiatrist and expert in problem gambling, for an engaging virtual training focused on the growing impact of problem gambling in Illinois. As expanded sports betting, online platforms, and video gaming terminals increase access across the state, healthcare providers are uniquely positioned to identify and intervene early.
This session will explore the prevalence and clinical presentation of problem gambling in Illinois, its intersection with mental health, substance use, and chronic disease management, and the downstream impacts on patients and families. Participants will gain practical knowledge of validated screening tools, brief intervention strategies, and referral pathways specific to Illinois resources.
Designed specifically for physicians and medical providers, this training will emphasize why routine screening for gambling disorder is essential to comprehensive patient care. Attendees will leave equipped with actionable strategies to integrate screening into everyday practice and connect patients with timely, evidence-based support.
