Self-Care is Quality Care
Before the pandemic, health care professionals were the most burnt-out professions in our society. The pandemic forced us to drastically change how we deliver care with little time to plan. We attempted to make these changes with the understanding that we put our health at risk every day. Unlike other work stressors, COVID-19 transcends the work environment as it threatened our lives and those of our family and friends. Besides the fear of the virus, we saw a fight for racial justice, a financial crisis, and an intense and divisive political election and insurrection. As the pandemic enters its second year, people are tired, traumatized, angry, and afraid.
This workshop helps to identify the dangers to our mental, physical, and social health resulting from the demands and of modern healthcare combined with the exposure to the stress and trauma of our clients and patients. Identifying when we experience burnout, secondary trauma, moral injury, and compassion fatigue alerts us to get the help and support we need to recover our wellness. Besides focusing on our health, this series will examine the relationship between the provider’s health and client and patient outcomes and how self-care is quality care.
